May death bring us back to life!

  • Thursday 5 June 2025, from 7:00 to 8:30 PM
  • Location: Espai Buit
Summary
"May death bring us back to life! ""I feel, my Niece, that I am about to die; I should like to do so in a manner that would lead to believe that my life was not so wicked that I left behind a reputation for being a madman, for although I have been one, I should not like to confirm this truth in my death"". Don Quixote Is there anything positive in thinking about death? What do you believe can help us have a good death? Would you like to be a better support when your loved ones’ time comes? Do you feel you still have a long life ahead? Can we understand death beyond a simple abstraction? Can death awaken us to life? Nowadays, speaking of death is no longer taboo, let's be honest. Taboo is that which cannot be named nor mentioned. Spirituality is also spoken of very lightly and it is very hard to tell valuable insights from superficial noise. Science offers answers to questions that are often not entirely relevant. Reflecting on one's own death benefits even those of us who may still have many years ahead. It should be done not only to better accompany others in their final moments, but also so that death may find us in a state of acceptance, even in the harshest circumstances. Understanding the process of dying, whether literally or metaphorically, as the culmination of human experience."

ABOUT ME:

I could paste the entire list of studies and work experience from my CV here (and you won't be able to escape that), but let me first tell you the real reason why I am a doctor and why I dedicate myself to accompanying and caring for people at the end of their lives.

One of the earliest and most intense memories I have is the fear I felt of losing my mother, of her dying.

That fear motivated much of my early interest in wanting to solve difficult problems and, if possible, forever.

Furthermore, since I was little, I have been very lucky to be surrounded by great figures in medicine.

I always saw the doctor as someone special, a figure who embodied two traits that had always fascinated him and that had guided my life: the therapeutic power of his presence and the ability to reach the vulnerable spaces that frighten everyone. people without losing their equanimity.

Perhaps that is why, today, I place my work between life and death as a leap towards the frontiers, unexplored for me, of medicine; training in disciplines that range from the most artistic to the most academic.

Any event, no matter how painful and heartbreaking, can be transformed into something deeply meaningful.

I am Juan Sarmentero, a medical oncologist, and I accompany people at the end of life, also caring for their families.

Now, below I leave you some of the milestones of my academic and professional career.

ACADEMIC TRAINING:

Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery. Complutense University of Madrid. (2009-2014)

MIR training in Medical Oncology (2015-2020). Son Espases University Hospital

Master in Palliative Care and Supportive Treatment of Cancer Patients (2020-2022) Autonomous University of Madrid

Expert in Spiritual Accompaniment from the Francisco de Vitoria University (2021-2022)

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE:

Specialist in Medical Oncology, Inca Regional Hospital 2020-2021

Physician in the Palliative Care Unit. Medium Stay Unit at Joan March Hospital (2021-2022)

Physician and later physician in charge of the Palliative Care Unit at Manacor Hospital (2022-2024)

I currently work as a doctor in the Hospital Support and Palliative Care Team at Son Llàtzer Hospital, where I care for and accompany patients with advanced and progressive chronic illnesses, as well as cancer patients both during the course of the illness, early intervention, and at the end of it.

OUTSTANDING TRAINING:

MBSR (Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction). Taught by Nirakara Mindfulness and Yoga Institute. Validated by the Complutense University of Madrid.

Attendee of Workshops on the application of Mindfulness in the Health area. Taught by Ronald Siegel (PSYD, Harvard University)

Mindfulness, Vipassana and Zen meditation retreats with different teachers.

Compassion Cultivation Training Course. Taught by Gonzalo Brito Pons (PSYD Palo Alto USA).

Certified instructor of the Compassion Cultivation Training (ECC) program at Stanford University (2018-2019).

non-school of High Magic and Freedom (David Testal)

I have led several introductory programs in meditation and compassion cultivation for both healthcare and non-healthcare professionals, always with the aim of improving the relationship with ourselves and with others.

Over the years, many people have asked me if they could find me outside the hospital or if I worked elsewhere, if I accompanied in other ways.

My Ars Moriendi project was born with the purpose of establishing the necessary scaffolding to be able to accompany and help both patients and their families.

Today, I am dedicated to deepening and developing my own work methodology that seeks to integrate everything I have learned to improve the doctor-patient relationship.
