Miguel Riutort Huguet
Training Course on Practicing Compassion and Mindfulness
- Every Tuesday in May and June, from 6:00 PM - 8:30 PM
- Location: Espai Buit

Summary
"This course consists of 8 weekly sessions designed to nurture the qualities of compassion, empathy, and love towards oneself and others. Scientific research confirms that while the human brain is not built to endure chronic stress, it is equipped with an extraordinary ability for change. Thanks to neuroplasticity, the brain can learn and adapt throughout life, with no age limit. Yet, studies show that we spend nearly 70% of our day operating in a stress response, running on “autopilot.”
Over the 8 weeks, participants will train new ways of thinking, process information more coherently, deepen personal aspirations, develop healthier habits and acquire specific skills for improving how we relate to ourselves and others
This course is also offered at the Faculties of Psychology and Social Work at the Complutense University of Madrid. It has been scientifically validated in laboratory studies and shows strong evidence in terms of improving people's quality of life. While compassion is natural in human response to the suffering of loved ones, daily uncertainty and life experiences can sometimes limit our capacity to express it. In this course, mindfulness and compassion go hand in hand, but they go beyond merely feeling concern, pity, or sympathy for others.
The programme is designed to cultivate the qualities of compassion, fostering positive changes that help us to enjoy life more and improve interpersonal relationships, increasing self-care and progressively expanding the circle of compassion to all sentient beings on the planet. It integrates traditional contemplative practices with contemporary psychology and scientific research on compassion and mindfulness. The programme was created by a team led by Geshe Tupten Jinpa, a Tibetan scholar and principal translator of the Dalai Lama, alongside a group of contemplative experts, clinical psychologists and interdisciplinary researchers."
"Through mindfulness and compassion cultivation, we learn to foster courage and calmness, allowing us to be fully present with serenity, clarity and understanding. This presence empowers us to become more resilient, while protecting us from empathic distress.
Learn and practice new tools to enhance your own wellbeing and positively impact those around you.
Develop inner strength and creativity to face everyday difficulties and the courage to act with healthy empathy.
Reduce reactivity and isolation.
Promote a constructive way of ""being"" in the world.
Build mental and emotional resources to navigate difficulties with grace, foster acceptance, and grow through everyday challenges."
"The programme consists of six steps that are covered in 8 sessions:
Session 1: Settling the mind and cultivating focused mindfulness.
Session 2: Compassion for a loved one.
Session 3: Self-compassion
Session 4: Kindness to oneself
Session 5: Shared humanity and appreciation for others
Session 6: Expanding the circle of compassion
Session 7: Active compassion.
Session 8: Integrated mindfulness practice and compassion cultivation."
"In-person classes are 2 hours and 30 minutes long and include an introduction to the session, guided meditations, teaching segments, opportunities for sharing personal experiences, and theoretical content.
Meditation practices include mindfulness and visualisation exercises, breathing techniques and meditations aimed at developing understanding, empathy, flexibility, resilience and acceptance.
Practical exercises and mindful movements aligned with each session’s theme serve as tools to train deep listening and conscious communication.
Informal and actionable practical activities are provided to support the integration of learning into everyday life.
By enrolling in the course, participants commit to regularly engaging in the recommended weekly practices. The beneficial changes brought about by the programme depend largely on each individual’s dedication and consistent practice."
